Demoscene.tv

Thanks to a friend for these Amazing videos which are actually completely coded by programmers and then when viewed they are executed on a computer in real-time using an e.g. an .exe file.

This first video uses a programming/mathematical technique known as recursion which is also used to code fractals.

Nick Gentry Floppy Disc Art

"Throughout history, information has always been recorded on physical objects. Important documents, favourite songs, videos and more were stored on mountains of tapes, polaroids, cassettes and disks. As media is rapidly absorbed into the World Wide Web the rich variety of formats of the past are becoming obsolete."

This represents a big shift away from physical, real world objects, driving towards a human existence that is ultimately governed by billions of intangible data files. This release of information from the physical form allows personal data and identities to now be revealed and infinitely shared online. At the same time many of us consider individuality and privacy to be more precious than ever. Will humans be forever compatible with our own technology?

Each floppy disk used in the paintings has a history and story of its own. It represents the increasing pace of the modern life cycle, where objects are created, used and disposed of quicker than ever.

To challenge this notion, as these personal artefacts of life are cast aside, the obsolete are now given new life and a renewed purpose by using them as a medium for art." - Text from his website...

Andy Gilmore

Andy Gilmore makes psychedelic-ish, retro-futuristic art that seems to be all the rage today. (Especially with folk/electronica/indie/bass music labels nowadays)

"Born, raised and based in Rochester, New York, Gilmore applies the understanding of one practice with the other - applying the proportions of harmony to form and colour - colours as chords - and scales as tonal gradations, in order to create these geometric works of art."

UK Internet Ranks 25th - 'Not Fit For The Future'

Research sponsored by Cisco has ranked the world’s broadband networks, with the UK performing poorly in 25th place.

The research was based on 24 million speed tests performed in 66 countries. The ratings focused on both download and upload speeds, as well as latency, combined with broadband penetration to create an overall index of quality.
Sitting atop the table was South Korea then Japan, whose super-fast broadband was already judged to be fit for future applications such as streaming High Definition video.
At 25th, the UK came behind Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia to name a few. In fact both Bulgaria and Latvia had “ready for tomorrow” rated networks.
We’ll still be lagging just a tad behind South Korea, a country which is talking about having widespread 1Gbps by 2012. Yes – 1000Mbps. Makes you want to cry into your router…
