Jacob Sutton’s L.E.D. Surfer

Fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton swaps the studio for the slopes of Tignes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with a luminous after hours short starring Artec pro snowboarder William Hughes. The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke L.E.D.-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher.

Bloxels

Designer Jinha Lee wondered what was possible if pixels escaped from the monitor and became physical objects, so he created Bloxels.
These small devices are a prototype for a new type of display system that Lee began working on while studying at the University of Tokyo.

The design uses a module-based approach, consisting of translucent cubes that emit a colorful glow according to the transmitted data from the neighbouring bloxels. the user can freely move the blocks around and the image will transform accordingly.

Craighton Berman's Coil Lamp

This lamp by Craigton Berman is genius. Such a simple design, and it uses hardly any materials to make it.

So I've never heard of these til recently, but they've been going for a few years now. Created and pioneered by Graffiti Research Lab, its a great, and cheap, way to add some colour to the world.

Recycled Ink Cartridge Lamps

Ink jet printers tend to go through ink cartridges at incredibly fast paces. Millions of ink cartridges are thrown away each year or recycled, or occasionally you find a method to refill them, although most printer manufacturers warn you not to mostly because they make significantly more money from the ink than from the printers themselves. But there’s other ways to recycle them.


One crafty Etsy seller, Boxlightbox, has managed to find a great use for all the empty cartridges his company was discarding- he turned them into lamps. There’s the $35 single bulb lamp above or the big daddy $200 chandelier. They actually look pretty good! Available in all your favorite inkjet colors like matte black, cyan, light-cyan, magenta, light-magenta, yellow, light-black, and light-light-black. The chandelier actually has the colors arranged just like they are in the printer itself.

Dynamic Hand Powered Globe Lamp

Karin Johansson’s lamp is a wonderful and eco-friendly concept that uses the globe of the earth as your source of light and the kinetic energy of your hands as the source of power. A dynamo placed inside the globe converts the kinetic energy to light when you spin it. It’s amazing how the globe glows without the aid of power supply or batteries. The concept is designed to facilitate the generation (conversion rather) of energy where you are, instead of transporting it in all directions across the earth. In the process, the human body is made to do some exercise too. Check out the video below to see it in action.

Balloon Lamp

If you’ve always loved a birthday filled with balloons, then you might enjoy this twist to the common balloon. Instead of just hanging there for no real reason besides decoration, you could give them purpose. This balloon has an LED light placed inside of it, giving a soft lighting effect perfect for backyard parties and other random events. It uses 2 lithium-ion watch batteries that will allow it to shine for 100 hours.
But these don't come cheap. US$63 from Japan Trend Shop.

Lego Block Lights

These clever desk lamps get their inspiration from classic LEGO building blocks. These LED illuminated acrylic block lamps look just like a giant-size version of the popular plastic playthings. The blocks have a snap-off top layer that’s designed to hold pens, pencils and other office items. Each brick measures in at appx. 6″ × 4″ × 2.4″ (15 x 10 x 6cm) making them about 100 times larger than a 2×3 peg standard LEGO.

While they don’t actually show multiple lamps interlocked, I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t stack a bunch of these lamps to create large, illuminated sculptures, like the smaller block version below!

The guys who designed this LEGO block lamp managed to dig up some sort of industrial-strength blocks that won’t melt into a pile of smelly goo when subjected to the heat of a lightbulb. What makes the Block Light really cool is the fact that you can rearrange the pieces into pretty much any configuration you’d like.

The kit comes with 219 small, 16 medium, and 4 large heat-resistant clear acrylic blocks which can hold up to the heat of a 40-watt lightbulb.

Vertical Blind LED Lights

It appears that designers Yoon-Hui Kim and Eun-Kyung Kim have designed a blind that actually gives light. These individual tiles have a grid of white LEDs inside that can be clicked on in a variety of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Not only do these things make some interestingly shaped lights, but they are energy efficient as well. On one side are the LEDs, and the other side are solar cells that can charge them. So, during the day, when the sun shines on the blinds, you will have enough power to shine the LEDs at night.

Unfortunately, this is the part where I explain that these blinds are just a concept, and they won’t be available until some indeterminate point in the future. Too bad. I could really use something like this now.

Eric Staller

Eric Staller is a sculptor and photographer who is more known for permanent artwork in public places, but also for his experimentation with light. He was pulling off these kinds of amazing light photographs back in the 1970's and can probably be credited as being a pioneer and if not, the first person to play around with light in the urban environment. Hats off to one of the geniuses of photography

Touch Me!

This is an AMAZING video showing experimentation with multi-touch screen technology! I particularly like the section with what look like turntables...the future DJ's tool? I can just see this technology used to incredible effect at live music shows where the music and musician can actually create stunning visuals while they play their instruments. They might even be able to program notes with specific images so that repetitive and cognitive messages can be directed through the music not only through aural but visual stimulation as well.

I love this kind of technology because it feels like we are learning to breakdown the rules of nature and twist its abilities to our purpose. Should this type of technology become a part of everyday life I often wonder how it may effect the workings of our own brains, even our evolution as a species.

Eitherway..as the vid says..this is from 2006... so by the time this gets into the shops...just imagine what they'll be working on by then? GASP!!!!
