R.I.P. Chris Mac Daddy Kelly

Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly of 1990s hip-hop duo Kris Kross was pronounced dead this evening at Atlanta Medical Center after being found unresponsive in his home earlier in the day. He was 34...

Kelly's mother and the So So Def Family issued this statement on Thursday morning: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”

MCA Tribute At The MCA

I've only just discovered this this week. Brilliant idea.
Ad creatives James Beswick and Dan White remembered the late Beastie Boys rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch with a guerilla art installation at the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).
Their tribute, which is in aid of Cancer Council, involved hiring a professional human statue, decking him out in classic MCA gear and creating an unauthorised exhibit in one of the galleries. A placard resembling official signage was stealthily blu-taced to the wall beside the performer to help the illusion and explain the stunt to museum goers.

TVRBO HDA R.I.P.

I have learned today that the OG Funk and style master Tvrbo has sadly passed on to higher plains. This guy was not only one of the finest and most colorful of painters, character and style king but also a really lovely humble guy. His pieces and approach to walls were second to none putting him at the top of my list for influential writers. His absence will leave a hole and without a doubt he will be sorely missed. Big up Tvrbo may you continue to rip in paradise, our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this sad time. To celebrate his work here is a selection of what he left behind:

Getnloose has an interview with Tvrbo from 2010 HERE.

SURE Handstyle King

It has been a year since the tragic death of SURE (1986-2010) R.I.P. He had one of the sickest handstyles out there and it was so good to see his name still burning on the NY streets earlier this year...

RIP Brian Haw

Brian Haw, one of the most recognised protestors and peace campaigners of the last 10 years has sadly died.
His residence on Parliament Square in London from 2001-2010 in protest of UK and US foreign policy and subsequently the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq became a symbol for the anti-war movement.

RIP Nate Dogg

Just heard the sad sad news that Nate Dogg has died, aged 41.

Nate Dogg suffered a stroke in 2007, and then succumbed to a second one in 2008. Since then he had been undergoing physical therapy.
Although he did not release much solo material, his collaborations with hip hop's finest found him great success.

Mattia Fagnoni Association Charity Art Show

I was contacted via Facebook asking me to share with our readers a sad story about a child called Mattia Fagnoni, from Italy who has recently passed away....Mattia was born with “Sandhoff Syndrome”, a genetic, degenerative and lethal disease. His parents have created the “Mattia Fagnoni Association”, in order to raise funds for finding a cure for this disease and providing support for the ones who need it. Mattia was the only child in Italy to have suffered from Sandhoff Syndrome; so it was all the more difficult for his parents because they were alone and found it hard to get practical advice and to find some help from someone who knew about this disease and how to treat it. Sandhoff Syndrome is difficult to diagnose because only one case in a million suffer from this illness, and you can identify it only by a Pre-natal genetic diagnosis. They started to notice something when Mattia was in his 6th month, because he was unable to crawl and sit up, all basic steps in the stages of development.
Since then, worsening of vision made Mattia almost blind. By 27th months old, his condition worsened day by day: he was not able to move, and was left with only his touch and hearing senses functioning properly. Soon after, Mattia sadly passed away, but his parents have continued the fight against the illness. They are planning to hold another art show in Naples, Italy on the 26th April to the 8th May and are looking for submissions. All sales income will go directly to the “Mattia Fagnoni Association”....

If you would liek to take part and help the Fagnoni family out (like these artists above did), then please get in touch on Facebook....
To find out more information about Sandhoff Syndrome you should visit the site www.ntsad.org.

RIP Sure

This is very very sad news that I had to share with you all....

Words from FAUST:

“It is with my deepest regrets to inform you that this morning I received news of the passing of my close friend Sure. Last night he was killed in Afghanistan where he was stationed as a Intelligence Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Sure was born and bred in Brooklyn and recognized for his exceptional handstyle which brought together elements of classic New York graffiti with ornamental calligraphy. His script signatures could be found throughout the city and were a major influence on myself and countless others.

Sure also received great recognition as one of the most prominent sticker bombers of all time. Of the thousands of stickers he put up, nearly every one of them was individually hand done in an incredible array of styles. This was recently exemplified in Stickers: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art (Rizzoli) by DB Burkeman and in Martha Cooper’s latest book Name Tagging (Mark Batty Publishing) which features an interview with Sure.

Sure was like a brother to me. He was my partner-in-crime and my best friend. I am grateful for the time we had and that everywhere I go in New York City I see his name and know that his presence will be felt by many long after his passing.”
