Have Your Say: Vegetarianism – yay or nay?

Aside from proposed health benefits, some climate change scientists are now claiming that people can reduce their carbon footprint more effectively by eating less meat or becoming vegetarians. The amount of energy needed to farm, transport and cook meat is so great that going veg would greatly reduce the worlds emissions.

In a recent documentary by Supreme Master Television, NASA’s top Climatologist Dr. James Hansen claims that saving water, changing light globes and using cars less is not as effective in combating climate change as ‘going veg’.

Do you agree?

If global warming is real, do we all have a responsibility to go veg?

How far would you go to save the plant?

Leave us your comments.

Lets say this is true, I think in the long run (considering food shortages in many countries) the world would benefit more from improved research & technology in making the production of meat more economical and environmentally friendly, then trying to change the world to being veg.

Much the same as the car industry, banning cars outright is narrow minded but improving them, making them more green should be where the focus lies.

Need meat, must have meat....selfish or not, we are termed as 'Omnivores' for a reason. We can eat everything!

I was just surfing yesterday to see if I'm getting enough protein in my diet because I've just cut so far back on my meat intake. No problem. I'm still eating chicken (which isn't green but cheap and easy), salmon, lentils, brown rice, yogurt , etc. You can have a very healthy and delicious diet without a lot of meat. I still love lamb. I'll never be a vegetarian because I love meat, and that's the natural state of things. But frankly I've given up on eating excessive amounts because (1) it's expensive and (2) I think the way they grow and process beef these days, in factory settings, has taken all the flavor out of it. I don't even enjoy steak anymore. Except say at a Ruth Chris steakhouse.

i'm a meat eater...i love the taste of death!!!! but being a vegetarian is not a bad thing...cause many can easily get proper nutrition by eating eggs and dairy. On the other hand, a vegan diet is a ethical debatable
issue. Look at the article Death by Veganism and the utter stupidity of some vegan parents of feeding their babies solely fruit and soy milk instead of crucial breast milk.

even if the vegan mother would feed her baby breast milk her dumbass wouldn't know that the quality of her milk is subpar in quality b/c essientials like DHA found the omega-3 fats (only from protein sources) are lacking and crucial to human development.

Gah! Sounds like another cleverly disguised animal right agenda. Uh, no... better find a better way to contain/recycle/limit cow emissions cuz I like beef waaaaaaaaay too much. Plus, with the record snow and cold we've had this winter, there's no way anyone's gonna convince me to believe in global warming. Heck, I wish there way global warming. I'd welcome it right now. Maybe I'll put on a parka, go outside and burn some tires to speed it on it's way...

I beleive climate change is slowly occouring and that global warming is happening aside from what all the nay-sayers claim. Just because England is snowing in the middle of winter this year, dose not mean global warming is BS. Climate change can/will occour in many different ways around the world. You may not feel it this winter, but if you simply look at our emissions alone, change is inevitable without a doubt.

I am not 100% convinced that going veg can help the environment.. but one thing I truly believe is that humans generally are not prepared to make the sacrifices needed to help the planet (global warming or not), where as they are prepared to pollute it.

Yo, these some ignorant comments. As a vegan, I got to say a couple of things.

1: you bitches talking about how you need meat (you do have a right to eat it) but fuck. A little self control goes a long way. That's why we've got so many fat asses, people think they have no control over what they eat and they blame it on everything but their weak will power. You don't need to eat meat anymore than I do, you just want to eat it.

2: people need to stop spreading ignorant bullshit about vegans. If the vegan diet is so unhealthy why are their vegan bodybuilders and vegan triathletes?

3: No one ever said it was a good idea to make you kids vegan, it's and adult thing like sex or alcohol. Going vegan is something you choose to do once you have the ability to make the choice and you body is developed enough to handle it.

Word.

Frankensteiner,

Thans for your comment. You make some valid points. Meat is highly over rated and over consumed in most countries, whilst I dont believe in vegitarianism, everything in moderation, including morderation. I love meat, always will, and I aint guna apologise for it neither.. but I balance it with fruit and veg too.

I think people (meat eaters) give vegans a bad rap because they honestly feel that vegans give meat-eaters a bad rap. It works both ways.
