Skydive From Space Update 7: 2nd Manned Test Flight

Felix Baumgartner has completed his second test flight and plunged to Earth from an altitude of about 96,640 feet (25.9 kilometres). His top speed was an estimated 536mph (863km/h). He's aiming for a record-breaking jump from 125,000 feet, or 38 kilometres, in another month and hopes to go supersonic, breaking the speed of sound with just his body.

Art Shows London July 25th Onwards

DZINE: PHENOMENON

Late night opening: Friday 27th July, 6.30-8.30pm
(in association with SLAM Fridays)

Friday 27th July - Sunday 12th August

"When I was approached by the artist Hew Locke to take part in Deptford X, I immediately accepted. Not only am I fan of his studio practice, but when I found out it's proximity to the London Olympics, together with the work I was producing for my upcoming exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary, it felt like serendipity"
- Dzine

BEARSPACE and Deptford X are pleased to present the first UK solo show of Chicago based artist Dzine, invited on the occasion of Deptford X 2012. Phenomenon is curated by Hew Locke and Indra Khanna and is one of the highlights of the Deptford X programme, during the Olympics 2012. Phenomenon consists of a combination of mediums, which capture the spirit of “Szwaybar,” a phenomenon that is central to the youth of Curacao, and never previously documented or viewed outside of the Island.

Creepy Pencil Art

Laurie Lipton was born in New York and began drawing at the age of four. She was the first person to graduate from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pennsylvania with a Fine Arts Degree in Drawing (with honours). She has lived in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France and has made her home in London since 1986. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe and the USA.

Lipton was inspired by the religious paintings of the Flemish School. She tried to teach herself how to paint in the style of the 16th century Dutch Masters and failed. When traveling around Europe as a student, she began developing her very own peculiar drawing technique building up tone with thousands of fine cross-hatching lines like an egg tempera painting. “It’s an insane way to draw”, she says, “but the resulting detail and luminosity is worth the amount of effort.

Melbourne Group Exhibtion: Paperape

Paperápe is a group show featuring seven Melbourne artists who, over the past year, have formed a collaborative friendship via their mutual love of art. Heesco, Jack Douglas, Pierre Lloga, Facter, Mysterious Al, Hancock and Conrad Bizjak are now coming together to share their passion for painting walls, drawing and enjoying the vibrancy of Melbourne street art, and life in general.

Often finding themselves escaping the trappings of 9-5 work by hanging out and painting on the weekends, these seven artists now paint together under the somewhat humourous moniker of We Spray Weekends (WSW). From the side streets of the suburbs to the cities laneways, exhibitions and live art events, all the artists within Paperápe are all highly prolific and consistently chasing the artistic dream.

Paperápe will be an exhibition of paper based works showcasing each artists unique style and talent, offering a snapshot of their current directions and a glimpse towards several larger projects planned for the future. With drawings, paintings, collage, prints and other paper based works on display Paperápe is an exciting showcase of current work from a diverse and talented group of friends.

MCA Tribute At The MCA

I've only just discovered this this week. Brilliant idea.
Ad creatives James Beswick and Dan White remembered the late Beastie Boys rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch with a guerilla art installation at the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).
Their tribute, which is in aid of Cancer Council, involved hiring a professional human statue, decking him out in classic MCA gear and creating an unauthorised exhibit in one of the galleries. A placard resembling official signage was stealthily blu-taced to the wall beside the performer to help the illusion and explain the stunt to museum goers.

'Summer Sizzlers' Various Artists – Print Release by Stolen Space

Temporary Whiteboard Drawings

Gregory Euclide- the artist states"“In our culture, there is a strong emphasis on reproduction and the original seems less important. My students were shocked when I would erase the original, because they saw it firsthand, and they were disturbed that it was destroyed. People who do not see the original have no problem only looking at it on a screen or as a print, but once you see the original it is hard to let it go or believe that it could be destroyed.” Euclide relates this concept to societyʼs impact on the natural world by stating, “When people get to know nature and spend time in it, they start to realize how their actions affect it.”"
