Hunting non-endangered whales:

Simple.. either you agree or you don’t.

With increasing pressure on Japan to ban it’s scientific ‘research’ and commercial whaling operations, the ESPV team thought we’d throw this one out there for yall to respond to.. The question is, why should hunting non-endangered whales be illegal? Considering that the farming, production and slaughter of cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens and fish is legal?

If you are a meat-lover and have no issues over eating it, how can you be against whaling and animal cruelty in general but not mass-production meat served-up in our supermarkets everyday?

Additionally, if you’re a vegetarian or against animal cruelty – then surely this means you wear no makeup and take no medicines? The two most active industries using animal testing today are the medical and cosmetics industries. Is there any point being vegetarian when you still use cosmetics and medicines that are tested on animals?

So when it comes to hunting non-endangered whales, are you Yay or Nay?

I am a meateater, I love eating meat and I think humans have a right to, a right which has been around since the dawn of man.. a right (when you look at starving nations all over the wold) that is more important then an animal's rights.. thats my opinuion, humans come before animals, but that dosent mean we have to be stupid about the way we go about eating meat.

I think it's sad that the cheapest way to mass produce meat for the world often means being crule to animals and I hope that future R&D and evolving technologies mean that we can produce in large scale with less or no crulety.

I think it's halarious that many many people I have met who are against whaling wear makeup and take/use medicines.. almost every medical product on the market has at one stage been tested on an animal and the cosmetics industry is a joke.. but women all over the world paint their faces everyday to look more attractive.. such a joke.

I beleive whaling non-endangered whales should be legal if producing cattle for the mass market is leagal, but I dont beleive in the methods used in killing whales.

2 reasons it seems that people are against whaling are:

1) The whale has been etched in our minds as a charismatic species of animal in popular culture and this isn't going to change for a very long time.

2) The choice to eat whalemeat is practised by such a niche amount of people, that the rest of the world see it as being strange and/or cruel to even think about eating them....

I personally don't mind whales being slaughtered for eating purposes, as long as the global quota of approx 50 per year is adhered to AND the japanese stop hiding behind their excuse of killing whales for 'Scientific research Purposes'..that really bugs me...

Hmmmm... I think that if the Japanese actually *reared* the whales (and dolphins, and whatnot) there would be no issue of illegality. Chickens and cattle (which often come up when a question like this is posed) are all domesticated livestock, reared solely for the purpose of serving as human food sources. And as long as the Japanese simply continue pluckin' non-domesticated animals from the oceans (particularly mammals) like there's an endless supply, then there will continue to be issues.

Nay, I say.

Interesting point for sure...

I wonder what is more cruel though?.. hunting that which is wild, or breeding a life for the sole purpose of killing it for consumption. Is one really worse then the other? Surley they both should be seen as being equally unfair to the animal. The only difference I see is that animals in the wild know that predators could end their exsistance at any time, animals bred in farms dont even under the concept of living in the wild with natural predators.

I am not sure that *domesticated* animals should have less rights...

nay to Whaling!

its not just an issue of whether they are endangered or not. I'm pretty much against the killing of animals for 'optional' reasons. Shark fin soup is not for sustenance and neither is whale meat. This whole whaling issue is just a push by Japanese right-wing nationalists, it actually has very little to do with historical culture too, believe it or not.

I am not a vegetarian. And I do not believe our species evolved as vegetarians or to be vegetarians. I like consistency so I cannot argue with this because why should whaling be treated any differently than game management is treated all over the globe. At least the whale is used for food and other substances unlike `big-game hunting` purely for sport and trophy.

So Yay.
